Hollywood Glamour at Amal's Hair Design Salon
Hollywood Glamour at Amal's Hair Design Salon

Spring, 2014
By Dulcy Brightman

The above painting shows Amal outside her salon with a long-haired female client. Her boyfriend is suggesting that “just a pinch” should be cut! I hope you find this scene amusing! Although in Dulcy’s imagination, this situation must have been played out a myriad of times over the many years Amal’s Hair Design Salon has been in operation.

In reading over previous stories I have written, I’ve noticed that I’ve hardly touched on what happens to thousands of film/television employees that create the fabulous sets, and the many other capacities they serve while supporting what you see in theaters and home television sets across America, and the world. These hard working craftspeople, lighting technicians, make-up artist, film editors, etc., go home from the Hollywood Studios to the outstretched bedroom communities in other counties.

These “Industry” people often enjoy a day of pampering and relaxing conversations. Amal’s Hair Design Salon is imbedded in the coral landscape of Chatsworth. Indeed, there are beautiful rock formations, and mountains.

Amal’s Salon is located between Craggy View Street and Dupont Street, on Topanga Canyon Boulevard. During the 1940’s and 1950’s, cowboy movies were filmed north of Amal’s Salon in the mountains and valleys off of Topanga Boulevard. There is also an Equestrian Center nearby Amal’s that offers comfort with horses for children with disabilities.

Amal’s Salon offers services to the community of hair design, nail, skin care, and personal pampering. What sets Amal’s Salon apart from others is that she personally offers not just these mentioned services, but also “friendship for life;” this is no small order. What most don’t know is that Amal lost her home as did many others in the 1994 Northridge Earthquake. Despite this enormous challenge, Amal, offered her services then as now to clients rebuilding their lives.

Amal’s Hair Design Salon offers full service and early evening hours two days a week.
