The "Coffee at My House" Story
Coffee at My House
Painted in April, 2010

This is a painting of what I see when I look out of my living room window in the mornings and have my cup of coffee. In this picture, there is a Japanese vase with flowers that largely block the view, and the green house on the opposite side of my street. It is wonderful to be surrounded by so many flowers, both inside and outside.

No matter the time of day; it is a constantly changing view of the scene out my window. The light changes from east to west as the days pass by. Mostly, I am content to savor my steaming hot coffee and the early morning routines. The green house is a constant source of wonder as its facade slopes in an “A” shape.

Indeed, half of the green house is hidden by ivy or the huge trees surrounding it. I have seen the owner of the green house transplanting batches of ivy into the ground near the public sidewalk, and curb where cars park. Often, this woman has to remove the ivy from the red line parts of the curb that in California, mean “No Parking“.

Sometimes, I see this neighbor’s son coming to pick up some mail in the front mail box of the green house. He then goes to the back of his mother’s house. Otherwise, the middle aged woman, with the tightly pulled back gray hair in a bun is not seen other than to tend to the ivy she so loves. I prefer my flowers.

What is not seen in this painting, is the vast growth of crawling ivy. The owner and neighbor has purposely let the ivy grow over most of her front yard. This is probably because the strong California summers burn up most plantings. The ivy growth is a solution to the barren front yard. The ivy holds the earth well, and is more expansive with each year. My vase full of colorful flowers is hugely satisfying on even the worst of mornings.
