The "Dragonfly in Bouquet" Story
Dragonfly in Bouquet
Painted in April, 2010

One day I was putting flowers in a pitcher. Just outside my windows, there are flowering bushes. A Dragonfly suddenly appeared and landed very close to the window. It was actually moving to a closer location on the patio nearer to my window, when it looked right back at me. This was all the inspiration I needed to start painting.

Behind the pitcher and the flowers is an open window with views of the mountains that are part of an area known as Porter Ranch, in the San Fernando Valley. They can be seen from Northridge, California.

The Dragonfly I saw around my home was rather a surprise! Not only a surprise, it was ironic. This was the very week I had gone to a fund raiser to help Haitian Relief efforts. This was the time when Haitians suffered losses of lives, homes, and businesses, that were lost forever due to the major earthquake that year. The Benefit took place at “The Dragonfly Club” in Hollywood. Talk about ironic!

This painting hints at an abstract approach used to portray the blossoms of each flower. The flowers are bold enough to remain the center of interest against the landscape in the background. Although the colors are many, there is a quiet but bold representation as the pitcher is set upon the table.

I believe many will enjoy the rather muted colors that don’t overpower. So many people love this style as one recent visitor to my home, who was a trained artist in Russian, said “Dragonfly in Bouquet” reminded him of a Van Gogh! Believe me I hadn’t even thought of that until he mentioned it. In fact, the man stood there with a shocked look on his face. Then, it suddenly dawned on me that he might have a point!
