An Enlightened Prespective
Terror on Ballinger Street Happy New Year - 2014
By Dulcy Brightman

News of a recent law passed by a Southern California City Council that bans Pit Bulls (dogs) from residing in their heavily family populated locale. This is an enlightened step forward as more and more horrible incidents of dog bites or worse by this breed of dog are reported on numerous television news reports.

Since I have previously written about the serious nature and risk to humans by Pit Bulls in the past, it is only logical that I now commend that Southern California City for taking action! The question is why anyone would consider this breed of dog as a pet? Yes, Pit Bulls are very cute and adorable as puppies. The trouble is when certain people are not responsible, or deny that mature Pit Bulls have a predisposition towards violent actions. Not true? You
want to argue?

Certainly, the government of Ireland has made it quite clear through legislation that bans any ownership of Pit Bulls or any mixed breed Pit Bulls. In fact, these dogs are destroyed by the authorities in that country. Why, you may ask?

There is enough evidence to show that Pit Bulls can’t be trusted around humans, especially babies or young children. What is important to note is that insurance companies will take away their coverage to home owners if it is revealed that a dangerous dog resides in your home that has attacked humans.

What is also being reported in greater Los Angeles is that many Pit Bull dog owners are breeding them purely for profit. Recently, a television news report appeared that a person owning five such dogs killed a baby! This child had escaped from his grandmother’s house to the yard where these dogs were housed. Children do not expect that they could be harmed. It is time, therefore, for more counties and cities across America to see the light.

Here are some words of wisdom from The Department of Animal Care & Control.

Statistics estimate that between 2 and 3 million dog bites are reported. Most go unreported.
Children make up 60 percent of these.
Here are some steps to take to reduce threat of
dog bites or worse:
  • Spay/neuter your pet. This reduces aggression.

  • Train your dog to behave.

  • If dog shows aggression/disobedience, seek professional help.

  • Never approach a strange dog that is sleeping, eating, or caring for puppies.

  • Don’t pet a dog (even your own) without letting him/her sniff you first.

  • Avoid direct eye contact with a threatening dog. Instead, in a loud and firm voice say, “Go home!”

  • If you feel a dog is about to attack, do not scream or run. Remain motionless.
Then back up and move away until the dog is out of sight.

  • A good way to distract a threatening dog is to throw food or a ball.

So there you have it for a Happy 2014 New Year.
