The "Extended Laus Family" Story
A Story of the Spirit of Christmas Every Day
The Extended Laus Family
Painted in December, 2011
In late August 2011, I accepted the challenge of painting "anything I wanted" for The Laus Family. I decided that a scene that would best reflect this family would be that of their professional and private lives. The Laus Family first immigrated to this country from the Philippines over a decade ago.

Later, after I had completed this painting, I was to learn, to my great surprise, that the Laus wedding ceremony and reception was performed in the United States. I was shocked when, sight unseen, I discovered that the wedding dress I had depicted in this large painting is exactly what, Mrs. Laus, was wearing on her wedding day!

This Wedding Ceremony took place in California. It was as much a wedding as also a welcome to America by the many friends for Mr. & Mrs. Laus. Also, the wedding served as a party celebrating their future in this country for all their invited guests. The photos of this event are lovingly placed in Mr. & Mrs. Laus' Wedding Album. I was shown the album in December 2011, well after I had completed this painting.

This family painting exhibits Mr. Laus' fondness for his position with a well-known railroad company. Mr. Laus' is pictured as a young bridegroom, and later seated looking at his wife, (as well as standing with her on the railroad platform, with sons, daughters, their husbands, wives, and his grandchildren. This scene depicts a daughter who has graduated from college, is a public relations speaker, and is multi-talented. Her boyfriend at the time is standing with her who had been adopted into the family. As the Laus family says it best, "When you know us…we are your family!"

Mrs. Laus, has become a delightful help to me as her multi-talents abound in all sorts of supportive abilities. Also, Mrs. Laus is pictured in her favorite color of red. Mostly, she is the driving force for her six children to excel at their studies. Her jovial husband, Mr. Pete Laus, is a very easy going person whose personality tends to be more casual and humorous when his wife is trying to be so serious.

Each person in the family is given the spotlight, with whatever abilities or inabilities there are. There is always someone in the extended Laus family that has the skill, tolerance, and strength to carry out every problem or adversity. Case in point, the little girl depicted in the "Extended Laus Family" painting who is clinging to her father's pant leg, is disabled. This is a family in which each member of the family is a solid contributor to the whole. They work as a team. Even as their school/work schedules are more daunting than most; they all manage to achieve success. It is, after all, the American way!
