The "Sweater" Story
Sweater
By Dulcy Brightman

Sweaters are important. They can look good on, and keep you warm at the same time. Sweaters are something I’ve worn every cool or cold day. Such is the subject of the navy blue sweater pictured in this painting. It is worn over a pale lemon yellow top; thereby becoming an abstract representation.

There are two forms of abstract painting. One is of something, and the other from nothing. Does this seem odd? Well, it is. There’s a trick to the eye in the abstract painting that “represents” something. The question arises as to what it is?

The other type of no subject, but pure abstract forms is largely based on what the artist feels, which may be portrayed in lines, geometric shapes, splattered paint, or whatever. In other words, it is an expansion of the artist’s imagination. “How did that get in there” you may ask? It is simple. The more imagination the artist has, the more possibility of abstraction.

Really, the best painters are people who create something from nothing when (for example) facing a blank canvas, paper, or object. The problem is how to explore the most decorative work of art that may possibly have a message?

“Sweater”, is a study of space that begs the eye to confront what simple design might be? Oh yes, I forgot to mention, of all things, “design”! Design leads to the possibilities of endless uses. Really, all art may well begin with something that initially starts as what is known to most as “abstraction”.

Something to think about besides a mere sweater!
